David’s Musical: The Bubble
The Bubble
The Bubble is a musical comedy inspired by the internet gold-rush of the late 90s that fueled the tech stock bubble and it’s subsequent crash.
Synopsis: A pure-hearted young man from the mid-west fails his bar exam to become an environmental lawyer, then leaves his true love and values behind when he makes a Faustian deal with DotGod, the demon CEO of Silicon Valley, selling his soul for stock options.
David's footnote:
The original concept is by Karen Paull, who worked for a Silicon Valley tech co. in 90's. She wrote the majority of the book; I gave her ideas for a "Damn Yankees"-inspired Faustian plot twist where the central character makes a deal with the devil disguised as a Silicon Valley CEO (DotGod) and the only person who could bring him down is Dot-Broad - all of which she incorporated into the book.
I wrote the music, some lyrics solo, others in collaboration with Karen. Our musical was chosen out of over 1,000 submissions to be staged as part of the annual NYMF-New York Musical Festival, with an extraordinarily professional cast, Director-Choreographer Terry Berliner (Assistant Dir. of the Lion King on Broadway,) Music Director Lon Hoyt (Hairspray, On Your Feet,) Casting Director Michael Cassara, and we were given pro-lights, effects, staging for multiple performances on Broadway. It was the thrill of a lifetime. NYMF is a superb organization that allows the composers-collaborators to see their work fully staged with an audience so they can ascertain what they have and don't have - what works, what doesn't.
This very high-end "workshop" was the experience of a lifetime. I am working to release the full music soundtrack to The Bubble this year. We have great hopes for staging this in the future. I wish to also thank the great Michael Manoogian and associate Peter Green for helping create the Bubble "logo."
